Want to know the secret to what ALL healing is? It’s Energy – without it, life ceases to exist, and for our body to heal, it must first have the energy to heal. You may be thinking, if someone is already in a dis-eased state, how can this be a relevant statement? Well, I have a surprise for you! Our body is designed to heal – it just needs what it needs, and the primary element is energy.
So, how do we achieve energetic health, and how does it relate to mitochondria? In our previous article, Energetic Health, we came to understand that everything is connected in a synergistic cycle—the Cycle of Influencing Energy—where our emotions, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and energetics play a collaborative role in energy production, immune function, digestion, cardiovascular health, mental health, and so on. And yes, your thoughts, moods, and emotions are a considerable factor in your body’s ability to produce energy.
Therefore, when the amount of stress in our bodies and our lives exceeds our mitochondrial ability to produce energy – fatigue can be the only possible outcome. Fatigue is considered the root cause of dis-ease, and it tells us that your mitochondria need your immediate attention.
Let’s take a journey together as we explore the teaching concept ‘Eating Healthy Sweet 16 – Does your meal provide all the nutrients for Mitochondrial Energy Production?’ The information presented in this article is based upon research, Energetic Health Volume 1 by Dr. Henele, and the nutritional education curriculum provided at the Energetic Health Institute (EHI). (1) (2)
One of the best physical representations of what is described as the vital force present in each of our cells is a tiny organelle called Mitochondria. It is found in each human cell and is known as the “energy factory.” A cell may contain hundreds or even thousands of mitochondria based on the availability of essential nutrients, its function, and its need for energy. For example, the major organs like the liver, heart, muscles, and kidneys host thousands of mitochondria versus the cells of the skin.
The body, with the assistance of the mitochondria, is designed to produce energy through a series of chemical reactions in the form of Adenosine 5’ Triphosphate (ATP) – simplified, this occurs from the air we breathe (oxygen) and the foods we eat. The mitochondria use oxygen to produce energy protons that result in the production of ATP, which affects every function of the body, including enzyme production and maintaining blood alkalinity.
Enzyme production is essential for creating chemical reactions that are directly related to energy production, digestion, heart, lung, and liver function, to name a few. On that note, when the body is not utilizing oxygen efficiently and the lungs are not expelling enough carbon dioxide, acidity sets, paving the way toward fatigue and dis-ease. (3)
Mitochondrial function is not limited to energy production but serves multiple mechanisms varying from iron and calcium homeostasis to the production of hormones and neurotransmitters, such as melatonin. (4)
Therefore, supporting mitochondrial energy production is the first step to any healing journey, cleansing/detox program, and daily support for overall well-being. Remember, every function of the body requires energy. Before we look at nutrients and lifestyle goals that support energy production, let’s identify some factors that can deplete it.
The body does not differentiate between degrees of stress. Stress is stress – whether from a stressful job, environmental pollution, depression, anxiety, acidic diet, nutrient deficiencies, Delayed Food Allergies, musculoskeletal injury, and so on… All these situations are interpreted as stress, which leads to a domino effect that stimulates the overactivation of the sympathetic nervous system, which is known as fight or flight mode. If left unmanaged and the stress is repetitive and/or chronic, the consequence is an acidic internal environment, fatigue, and, therefore, a recipe for dis-ease.
At the Energetic Health Institute, this is further explained through an assessment tool called “4 Considerations for Healing”. By looking deeper at what may be impeding your body’s energy production, you are one step closer to healing.
Emotional Charge – Nervous System:
Never underestimate emotional charge and its effects on the nervous system and energy production.
Root Causes: negative internal dialogue, internalized emotions, physical and/or emotional trauma.
Effects: disrupts energy production, acidifies blood, creates biomechanical misalignment, and suppresses energy flow.
Acidic Cellular Environment – Blood & Tissues
Root Causes: nutrient deficiencies, industrialized foods, dietary & environmental pollution, and emotional charge.
Effects: fatigue, cellular damage, suppressed immune system, scar tissue, chronic infections/inflammation, pollution bioaccumulation & impaired organ function.
Biomechanical Misalignments – Musculoskeletal System
Root Causes: surgeries & injuries, scar tissue, weight gain, tension, lack of self-confidence, poor body-awareness
Effects: impedes breathing and spinal mobilization, causes energy misalignments, hardens organs due to suffocation / impeded function, and acidity becomes the new normal.
Scar Tissue – Myofascial Network
Root Causes: physical & emotional injuries and any of the above considerations, their causes, and effects.
Effects: compression of the vital tissues (nerves, arteries, veins, lymph), creating a safe haven for infections – effectively isolating the cell from nourishment and relief.
The assessment tool described above is an excellent guide to identifying where you may be holding on to stress the most. Every decision you make about what to eat or drink is an opportunity for you to improve your health.
The foods we eat influence how efficiently our body maintains alkalinity and supports mitochondrial energy production. However, many elements can cause the body to fluctuate out of balance towards acidity; some examples are stress, eating non-organic foods, GMOs, sugar drinks, medications, negative thoughts, or experiencing Delayed Food Allergies. (5)
Healthy for one does not mean healthy for all. If you have a delayed food allergy, even foods that have been labeled healthy could be causing you harm, affecting energy production, respiratory, skin, and neurological function, as well as setting the stage for chronic inflammation, digestion disorders, depression, and more. For more information, visit Food Allergy Screening.
Eat Organic
Organically– sourced foods for optimal nutrient density and alkalinity. Incorporating an organic, balanced, alkaline diet is the primary step to improving mitochondrial energy production. Energy cannot be produced in an acidic cell environment.
Clean Water
Drink / Cook only with clean, filtered, and/or distilled water. Learn how to ensure the water you put into your body is clean, healthy, and free of anything that could harm your pursuit of energetic health.
Learn how to make your own Holy Water.
Green Foods
Eat something green every day. Porphyrin rings (chlorophyll) play a huge role in the formation of red blood cells, detoxification, and especially in the final assembly of ATP during mitochondrial energy production.
Nutrient Rich Cooking
Simple & Healthy Cooking Methods. Nutrient-rich cooking is a cooking style that utilizes science-based principles to optimize the preservation of beneficial vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other nutrients found in food, which can easily be destroyed if care is not taken in preparation and cooking.
Lifestyle
Any physical exercise longer than 30 minutes from the point of initial perspiration, practiced four to six times per week, along with a calorie-restricted diet, can improve ATP production. For optimum health benefits, combine your physical regime with sunlight, which can naturally support the uptake of another essential vitamin for mitochondrial energy production—vitamin D.
Meditation / Breathing practice
Mitochondria thrive in a stress-free environment. Mindful daily meditation, yoga, tai chi, or breathing practice, for example, can help mitigate the effects of stress. In fact, regular practice of relaxation techniques has been shown to upregulate genes linked to healthy mitochondrial function.
Grounding
Facts are facts… Grounding/Earthing provides a primary source of cellular restoration and energy by supporting the mitochondria—literally providing energy to the cell. Do you want to learn some healthy habits for grounding and earthing that can benefit you and your entire family?

Sleep
During sleep, the body gets rid of waste products that can be toxic to mitochondria. A lack of sleep and abnormal sleep patterns can increase stress and affect mitochondrial function, hormone production, healthy enzyme production, and your body’s natural ability to repair itself.
(6)(7)(8)(9)(10)(11)
Nutrients: Mitochondrial nutrients include B vitamins, minerals, polyphenols, and other nutrients, such as L-carnitine, alpha-lipoic acid, coenzyme Q10, pyrroloquinoline quinone, chlorophyll, quercetin, resveratrol and glutathione for example. They can be taken as supplements, or they can be found in natural, unprocessed organic foods, such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, seafood, and meats. (12)
Another nutrient that plays a key role in mitochondrial function is Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) – derived from vitamin B3 (Niacin) and found in every single cell in the body. Adding foods like nuts (especially peanuts), seeds, grains, mushrooms, and green leafy vegetables can improve NAD levels. (13) (14)
Botanicals: Siberian ginseng, Green Tea, cordyceps, and Astragalus are just a few examples. Herbs provide excellent support for the body. However, they reach their peak effectiveness only when mitochondria have everything they require to produce energy.
Hormones: Mitochondria thrives on balanced thyroid hormones and cortisol. To learn more about how nutrition impacts mental health, visit Hypothyroidism & Mental Health.
