1. Eating an alkalizing organic plant-based diet provides health benefits, such as optimal bone health, while helping prevent chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disorders, cancer, neurological conditions and more.
2. Mitochondrial energy production is increased by the Net Effect pH of the foods we eat. The Net Effect pH is determined by the body’s metabolism and cellular enzyme formations that change some foods from acidic to alkaline once eaten.
3. With “The Rainbow Diet”, implementing an organic plant-based diet has never been easier. Learn how colorful organic fruits and vegetables support the body’s alkaline-acid balance, creating a natural healing environment rich with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.
The 4th principle of the Eating Healthy Sweet 16 teaching concept at the Energetic Health Institute asks this crucial question: “Is your meal 60% Alkaline or Higher?” When discussing Holistic Nutrition, we want to consider whether the foods we eat assist in creating a more alkaline healing environment, engaging the body’s Parasympathetic Nervous System (Rest & Digest), or if they are leading to tissue breakdown, triggering the Sympathetic Nervous System (Flight or Fight) while taking a toll on mitochondrial energy production and creating an Acidic environment?
The foods we eat influence how efficiently our body maintains alkalinity and supports mitochondrial energy production. However, many elements can cause the body to fluctuate out of balance towards acidity, such as stress, non-organic or genetically modified foods, high-sugar drinks, medications, negative thoughts, or delayed food allergies. (1)
Studies support that eating an alkalizing organic plant-based diet assists the body in maintaining alkalinity in every tissue, organ, and cell. This provides health benefits, including optimal bone health, all while fighting off chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disorders, cancer, neurological conditions, hypertension, memory impairment, and more. (2) (3)
Foods (or substances) can be either alkalizing or acidifying. Due to the body’s many enzymatic chemical processes, certain acidic foods outside the body may become alkalizing when eaten. This is where the term Net Effect pH comes in. “Net Effect pH is the distinction between the pH of the Food (or Substance) outside of the body versus the pH of the Food (or Substance) once it enters the bloodstream via oral, respiratory, or intravenous routes.”- Dr. Henele For example, outside the body, lemon is considered an acidic food; however, when consumed, it is actually alkalizing to the body (assuming the person consuming it does not have an allergy to it).
In addition to food, our thoughts and the air we breathe are key factors affecting the body’s alkali / acidic balance. Let’s explore the Net Effect pH and how it can support a more balanced alkaline healing environment. (4) (5)
Before we begin, let’s review some basics about pH, acidity, and alkalinity. Acidity is measured on a pH scale ranging from 0 to 14. If the pH is lower than 7, it is considered acidic; if it is higher than 7, it is alkaline. In its purest form, water is considered Neutral with a pH of 7. All living organisms and cells on earth depend on maintaining this synergistic balance of pH levels. Even the soil pH in which plants are grown considerably influences the mineral content of the foods we eat.
Studies confirm that GMOs and conventionally grown foods with pesticides and herbicides disrupt the alkali-acid balance of the soil and, in turn, affect the food’s micronutrient and phytochemical density or nutrient density. These food sources open up the development of many chronic diseases, including inflammation, cancer, gastrointestinal disorders, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, low muscle mass, memory, cognition, and other chronic health conditions. By choosing to eat “Organic Foods,” you are supporting your body’s innate healing mechanisms while supporting regenerative agriculture and the elimination of chemical pesticides and herbicides that destroy the critical synergetic relationship between microorganisms in the soil and crops. (6) (7) (8)
In the body, the physiology of an acid-alkaline balance is essential. This is because many functions in the body occur only at a certain level of acidity or alkalinity. For example, the stomach has the highest acidity (pH 1.35 – 3.5) to aid digestion and protect against unwanted microbial organisms. At the same time, most other organs, cells, and blood function best in an alkaline pH ranging from 7.35 – 7.45.
Our lungs and kidneys are primarily responsible for controlling our blood’s pH while supporting the body’s naturally produced buffers. There is a scientific debate on how foods affect the pH of the blood. However, scientific studies all agree that the effect food has on the kidneys, known as Potential Renal Acid Load (PRAL), determines where the food fits in the context of an acid/alkaline diet. For example, citrus fruits are acidic but are considered highly alkaline foods because they have a low renal acid load. (9) (10)
It is often said that disease and disorder cannot take root in a body that has a balanced pH. Organic and biodynamic foods assist the body in making up the difference for depleted nutrients, antioxidants, and weakened immune systems, buying time for the body to heal, restore and replenish itself. (11)0
The research is clear, the adverse long-term effects of acidifying foods, such as GMOs, non-organic fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, grains, and processed foods increase the development of chronic health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, kidney, liver, cancer, and cardiovascular disorders.
The Net Effect pH results from the foods we eat and our metabolism. Because many enzymes and chemical reactions in the body work best at a particular pH, a slight change in the pH can profoundly affect body function. Alkaline foods that are organic or biodynamically grown, free of pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides in nutrient-rich soils, support the nutrient density of the whole body.
An excellent method to implement into each meal is to incorporate something green and aim for 60% of your meal being alkalizing food choices. The Rainbow Diet is a great and fun tool to help you eat colorful organic fruits and vegetables with fiber, micronutrients, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory properties that support your overall health. If you choose to incorporate meats and fish into your diet, keep it moderate, and be sure to choose organic, free-range, grass-fed, antibiotic-free meats, poultry, and wild-caught fish. It supports an alkalizing diet, ensures fewer toxins and a healthier way of life. (12) (13)

ALKALINE FOODS and Sources with High Net Effect pH (Organic)
Oxygen and chlorophyll are two of the highest sources of alkalinity. Therefore, along with daily breathing practice, some of the top food picks include mushrooms, citrus fruits, sprouts, blackberries, blueberries, spinach/kale (greens), avocado, sweet potato, cucumber, jicama, wheat grass, broccoli, oregano, garlic, ginger, green beans, endive, cabbage, celery, red beet, watermelon, figs, and ripe bananas.
Organic meats, poultry, and fish have a Net Effect pH considered moderately acidic; however, when incorporating it with alkalizing green vegetables, you can create a more balanced meal plan.
ACIDIC FOODS with the highest Negative Net Effect pH
Excess animal meats in the diet (from non-grass-fed organic sources), excess hormones from foods, plastics, health and beauty products, antibiotics, non-organic dairy Products, soda and artificial sweeteners. Also, exposure to chemicals and radiation from household cleansers, building materials, computers, cell phones, and microwaves.
When maintaining your meals in the range of 60% Alkaline or higher, you support your body’s mitochondrial energy production and, therefore, the body’s innate healing mechanism.
Here are just a few ideas for naturally colorful meals that can be incorporated daily into an alkalizing ‘Rainbow Meal Plan’:
Greens and Blues – Nori seaweed wraps filled with sliced avocado, alfalfa, and sliced cucumber, or a blueberry, avocado smoothie
Reds, oranges, and yellows – Sliced banana, papaya, and mango, topped with fresh pomegranate seeds
All Greens – Salad of baby spinach and sprouts, with avocado, pumpkin seeds, chopped cucumber, sliced zucchini pasta, and green olives
White – White bean hummus with raw cauliflower florets
White and purple – Stir fry of onion, garlic, mushrooms, purple sprouting broccoli, red and white cabbage, mixed with white beans and kidney beans
A full rainbow meal – Leafy green salad topped with avocado, cucumber, red and yellow pepper, carrot, zucchini pasta, and tomato, garnished with arame seaweed strips
While no single diet plan helps everyone, what is healthy for one may not be healthy for another; however, following an alkalizing organic plant-based diet ensures a step in the right direction. In today’s world of engineered foods sprayed with pesticides and herbicides, aiming for an organic alkalizing diet may be the next step in improving the health of you and your loved ones.
Food and health are intimately tied together, but it’s also important to remember that optimal health also includes maintaining regular physical activity, quality sleep, stress reduction, meditation/breathing practices, healthy body weight, and social connections. Choosing an organic alkalizing nutritional regime supports the body’s Parasympathetic Nervous System (Rest & Digest), which promotes energy-cultivating responses by encouraging positive internal dialogue, accountability, and appreciation.
By making healthier food choices, we become more aware of our moods and thoughts; from there, we can decide whether to stay in that thought or change it.
