How Our Bodies Overcome Infection

AT A GLANCE

  • Headaches, swelling, fatigue, and muscle cramps are all signs of a sluggish lymphatic system.
  • Our lymphatic system is a network of vessels, nodes, and organs that help clear waste from the body and fight infections.
  • Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system has no “pump” and must rely on movement and muscle contractions to keep its fluids moving.

INTRO

Do you struggle with frequent headaches, joint pain, muscle cramps, swelling around the ankles, or fatigue?

I have run into some of these challenges, over the years, and it’s no fun. But the good news is, there’s plenty you can do about it.

One of those things — as Dr. H often tells us at EHI — is to “Move your booty!”

Let me explain why movement is so important…

But first, let me tell you about the lymphatic system because, if you’re feeling at all tired or achy, the chances are yours is running a little slow.

The lymphatic system? What’s that? you might be wondering.

And that’s no surprise because our lymphatic system is one that doesn’t get talked about a whole lot.

WHAT IS THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM?

I like to think of the lymphatic system as the body’s hidden network that plays a major role in immunity. In fact, it is our main defense against infection.

The lymphatic system is a secondary circulatory system. Its main function is to pick up excess fluid — called lymph — from our tissues. Lymph fluid travels through our lymph nodes, which filter out harmful germs, foreign particles, and abnormal cells. (1)
Once filtered, the lymph is delivered back into the bloodstream. This is where waste products can be distributed to the kidneys and liver for proper disposal.

Lymph nodes are much more than just a station to filter waste products. Lymph nodes are where lymphocytes are produced. Lymphocytes are white blood cells that fight viruses, bacteria, and other parasitic cells brought to the lymph nodes. (2)

Our lymph nodes also contain macrophages, another type of immune cell. Their job is to engulf and destroy foreign substances, damaged cells, and cellular debris. Together, lymphocytes and macrophages are our main line of defense against illness and prolonged infection. (3)
As you may know, the body eliminates waste and toxins through a few different processes. The water-soluble waste is filtered through the kidney, producing urine. Fat-soluble waste is processed through the liver and intestine, which then produce stool.

"A higher body temperature slows and may even stop the growth and reproduction of fungi and bacteria."

One overlooked and under-appreciated process of elimination is sweating. When your body begins to overheat, you begin to sweat. This is because your brain sends signals to your glands to release a mix of water and salt. Once this perspiration interacts with air, it begins to pull the heat away from your body, cooling you off in the process.

When the body responds to illness with a fever, sweating helps to eliminate some of the toxins through the skin. Essentially rinsing away the microorganisms.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

It’s important to know how your body fights infection and illness so that you can help yourself feel better for longer. Understanding this process can also prevent unnecessary concern.

When looking at a fever from a healing perspective, you will find that the body’s natural response to illness is to overheat. This makes the body inhospitable for many pathogens.
A higher body temperature slows and may even stop the growth and reproduction of fungi and bacteria. This allows phagocytic cells (cells that remove particles that reach the blood) to attack invaders more vigorously.

This is why a fever is not necessarily a bad sign — even if it feels that way — and it should not be treated, unless the fever lasts too long or gets too high.

Sometimes our lymphatic system isn’t able to perform as it should. A main cause of this is from lymphedema. Lymphedema is a chronic condition that causes swelling when lymph fluid builds up in soft tissue.

Lymphedema can be caused by a damaged or blocked lymphatic system. This sluggishness can happen naturally over time, or it can be triggered by surgery, injury, infection, or cancer. (4)

HOW TO GET YOUR LYMPHATIC SYSTEM MOVING

When your body has a buildup of fluids, you may have difficulty breathing or your limbs may become swollen and feel heavy. In these situations, it is good to consult your healthcare providers and see if a lymphatic drainage massage might be helpful.

You can also perform lymphatic massage yourself, using light circular strokes that help shift the fluid toward your lymph nodes.

A lymphatic drainage massage may be needed if you experience:

  • Swelling (puffy eyes, swollen face, fluid build-up in your arms, legs, or ankles)
  • Post-surgery swelling or bruising (after plastic surgery or medical procedures)
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Frequent minor illnesses

However, you should NOT undergo lymphatic drainage massage if you have an active infection or have a history of blood clots, heart failure, or kidney disease.

OTHER WAYS TO LIVEN UP YOUR LYMPH

Try these additional ways to get your lymphatic system flowing: (5)

  • Dry brush your body before a shower (to stimulate lymph activity beneath your skin)
  • Diaphragmatic breathing (to stimulate lymph around your organs)
  • Regular physical exercise (especially movement like dancing, rebounding, bouncing in place, or light jogging)
  • Sweat in a dry sauna (for twenty minutes or more)
  • Avoid tight clothing (especially bras, which can constrict the lymph nodes under your arms and in breast tissue)
  • Drink plenty of clean water (learn how to make your own “Home Brewed Holy Water”)
  • Avoid toxic foods and beverages (especially conventionally grown or GMO fruits, vegetables, and animal products; sugar [try raw organic honey, instead]; and alcohol)
As with anything you do to improve your health, it is a great idea to do your own research and get further education. The Energetic Health Institute is here to help you learn about how your body works and discover natural ways to assist it in keeping you happy and healthy.
