HISTORY

Hawthorn’s place in myth and folklore is noted in many ancient cultures, including Celtic, Greek, Roman, and throughout Asia.  In folk medicine, the flowers, leaves, and fruit were used to assist all matters of the heart, including physical and emotional, reducing blood pressure, anxiety, and inflammation.

Until today, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has used hawthorn to improve digestion and cardiovascular function. Modern medicine is now using hawthorn to help treat chronic heart failure, elevated cholesterol, and coronary heart disease. It is seen as a tonic for strengthening heart contractions, thereby decreasing fatigue and shortness of breath, all of which help to improve endurance. (1) (2) (3)

At the heart of it all – no pun intended, hawthorn loves the heart! It has been used to treat heart disease as far back as the 1st century. By the early 1800s, American doctors were using it to treat circulatory disorders and respiratory illnesses. Luckily, hawthorn grows all over Eurasia and the Americas, and hundreds of species have adapted to their native climate. This makes hawthorn easy to use and easy to grow! This heart-loving herb can live for 100 years or more and contains almost 300 different types of species – all having wellness benefits. (4)

Let’s dive in to learn more about hawthorn’s potent antioxidants, health benefits, and how you can begin supporting your heart health today with a few easy-to-follow recipes.

THE ENERGETICS

The energy of food and herbs is not only about their nutritional or caloric value – it is also about their qualities (i.e. warming, cooling, moistening, drying etc) which affect the body’s overall balance.  At the Energetic Health Institute,  this understanding is unified by several teaching concepts including the Cycle of Influencing Energy and the 5 Elements Perspective – associated with TCM. (5) (6)

From the 5 Elements, hawthorn is an alkalizing warming herb that supports the body’s parasympathetic nervous system and is associated with the Fire and Earth elements benefiting cardiovascular and digestive health. The Fire element of the heart is interconnected with the small intestines – therefore, a food/herb that assists with heart health will also benefit the health of the small intestines while influencing emotions and vitality.

Element: Fire

  • Connection to the Heart: Hawthorn cleanses the heart of negativity and replenishes the body through nourishment – benefiting cardiovascular health.
  • Actions:
    • Improves blood circulation and helps dissolve blood stasis.
    • Improves oxygen availability to the muscles
    • Eases respiratory distress i.e. Asthma
    • Calms the heart and supports emotional well-being, as stagnation can lead to anxiety or irritability (Fire imbalances).

The energetics of hawthorn brings a message of hope and healing for our heart on both the physical and emotional level – like other tonics, it focuses on stabilizing the existing system to achieve a healthy balance.
