Notably, it is considered one of the oldest herbs used by practitioners of ancient Egypt, Greeks, Ayurvedic, and Traditional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years to support the body in so many different ways. It was used as a panacea herb to treat various mild to extreme health conditions. Due to its prevalent use in ancient Egypt, N. sativa has been labeled the ‘secret of the pharaohs.’ (3)
Native to the Mediterranean and Asian regions, black cumin seed has been used as a vital ingredient in many food dishes, skin and hair healing balms, and in various compositions to treat headaches, toothaches, nasal congestion, digestive disorders, skin conditions, intestinal worms, parasites, conjunctivitis (pink eye) and more. (4)
Ancient wisdom meets modern science – black cumin seed and its medicinal uses have been confirmed by hundreds of published peer-reviewed studies for the treatment of digestive tract conditions, including gas, colic, diarrhea, dysentery, constipation, and hemorrhoids. It is also used for respiratory conditions, including asthma, allergies, cough, bronchitis, emphysema, flu, swine flu, and congestion. (5)
The effects of the combined nutritional and medicinal value of black cumin seed oil are that it not only helps to alleviate the current condition but also helps the body build further resistance against future diseases (acquired immunity).
When the body’s defense mechanism is deficient and can no longer function properly, pathogens are given a chance, increasing the risk of infections, allergies, and other chronic diseases, including cancer and diabetes.
There are several mechanisms by which N. sativa provides such magnificent healing properties. Research shows that one of its mechanisms of action includes assisting with acetylation, which renews cells and repairs DNA. Another is its most active ingredient, known as thymoquinone, which works to reduce the level of oxidative stress, which is an imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants in the body. (7) (8) (9)
